Squaresoft
Squaresoft (oft nur
Square genannt) ist ein japanischer
Videospiel-Hersteller, der
1983 als Teil der
Software-Firma Denyuusha gegründet worden ist. 2003 ging die Firma durch die Fusion mit Enix in die Firma Square Enix über.
1985 begann Squaresoft mit der Entwicklung von Spielen für das Nintendo Entertainment System. Die ersten Veröffentlichungen waren nicht sehr erfolgreich und so stand das Unternehmen 1987 kurz vor dem Konkurs. Der Angestellte Hironobu Sakaguchi erhielt den Auftrag zur Entwicklung eines Spiels, das über Aufstieg oder Fall von Squaresoft entscheiden sollte. Der Name des Spiels war Final Fantasy und sollte in die Geschichte der Videospiele eingehen - als eines der revolutionärsten und erfolgreichsten Spiele aller Zeiten. Seither sind mehr als ein Dutzend Spiele unter dem Namen Final Fantasy erschienen und die Serie ist zum Inbegriff des Computer-Rollenspiels geworden.
2001 veröffentlichte die Tochterfirma Square Pictures den Kinofilm Final Fantasy : Die Mächte in dir.
2002 fusionierte Squaresoft mit Enix (ein Videospiel-Hersteller, der vor allem mit Dragon Quest und Terranigma bekannt geworden ist).
2003 ist die Fusion komplett und die Firma tritt nur noch als Square Enix auf.
